State government has given local health departments the responsibility to ensure that businesses providing food to the public are safe and hygienic. We help keep the public healthy through inspection of over 150 establishments, checking for things such as good sanitation and food handling practices, proper refrigeration, cooking, and serving temperatures. These inspections occur without warning at restaurants, grocery stores, delis, school cafeterias, hotels/motels, drug stores/pharmacies, etc.
Inspections are unannounced.
Inspections only reflect a snapshot in time.
Very Good - 93 to 100% = A on green paper
Passed - 85 to 92% = B on blue paper
Poor - Below 85% = C on pink paper
According to State Code, scores cannot be posted until 10 days after the inspection, unless we receive the written response paper from the restaurant before the 10 days have expired.
An inspection report is given to the food establishment after each inspection -- it is public record.
At places with problems, a follow-up inspection is made to verify that compliance has been achieved. A low grade may be changed at that time.
